What this dataset contains

Central Bank tables report district banking outlets by institution, total branches, population in thousands, people per branch and branches per 100,000 people for 2022–2025. The national network table extends to 2013 and separates commercial banks, specialised banks and co-operative rural banks. Revised and provisional flags, displayed values and cached spreadsheet formulas are retained.

How it is used here

Compare the latest district banking-density figures, examine district outlet counts, or track the national licensed-bank network using its own historical table. Select the source table and branch scope before comparing totals.

What it cannot tell you

The source counts all banking outlets except Student Savings Units; these are not necessarily full-service branches. Density uses total population, not adults, account ownership, travel time or digital-banking access. Population is reported in thousands and the source’s density formulas use those denominators; they are not replaced with census counts. District and national tables overlap. Their 2022 licensed-bank totals differ: 3,632 in table 7.8 and 3,630 in table 7.9; both remain separate. Rural-inclusive totals in 2013–2018, 2020 and 2021 also differ from licensed-plus-rural counts; the affected observations have individual review notes. Subtotals, individual banks and rural-bank-inclusive totals overlap and must not be added together. Bank names retain source wording; DFCC’s 2015 amalgamation and the 2019 Lankaputhra merger affect historical institution comparisons. Blank cells remain unavailable, while printed numeric zeros remain zero. Cached formulas are preserved without recalculation. The 2025 figures are provisional.
