What this dataset contains

DCS Household Income and Expenditure Survey means compiled in the 2026 Pocket Book. Selected food expenditure and quantities cover 2012/13, 2016 and 2019. Nonfood expenditure covers 2009/10, 2012/13, 2016 and 2019. Spending is in current Sri Lankan rupees per household per month; food quantities retain their separate units. The 2009/10 round excludes Mannar, Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu.

How it is used here

Compare selected food-category expenditure in 2019 or track housing expenditure from the full-island 2012/13 round onward. Rice and other reported food quantities can be selected separately.

What it cannot tell you

The figures end in 2019 and do not describe current living costs. Means are per household, not per person, and prices are not adjusted for inflation. Only selected food categories are included, so they do not establish a complete household budget. The source separately reports other non-consumer expenditure; it should not be treated as household consumption. Quantity columns for aggregate food groups have no common unit and contain dashes; those cells remain without numeric values, with review notes. Quantities do not measure individual dietary intake.
