What this dataset contains

DCS Household Income and Expenditure Survey results from 2006/07, 2009/10, 2012/13, 2016 and 2019. The table reports mean monthly household income in current Sri Lankan rupees and the household-income Gini coefficient, nationally and for urban, rural and estate sectors. The 2006/07 round excludes Northern Province and Trincomalee; 2009/10 excludes Mannar, Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu.

How it is used here

Compare sector income and inequality from the full-island 2012/13 round onward. Earlier rounds remain available with their geographic exclusions.

What it cannot tell you

These historical survey results end in 2019 and cannot describe current household incomes. Income is a mean per household, not a median, per-person income or inflation-adjusted amount. Gini uses a 0–1 scale and cannot be added across sectors. Coverage changes prevent treating the early rounds as an unchanged national series. Survey periods and sector definitions must be retained.
