What this dataset contains

National Transport Statistics 2024 supplies the 2010–2023 national crash series and 2023 crash counts by police division, classified by fatal, grievous-injury, non-grievous-injury and damage-only outcomes. The DCS Statistical Abstract adds Colombo police-station-area crash counts for 2020–2024 and national 2024 fatalities by road-user group. Both publications attribute their figures to the Police.

How it is used here

Track crashes within the national series, compare 2023 police divisions, examine Colombo station areas, or inspect the 2024 road-user fatality distribution. Choose the required table and geographic scheme before comparing observations.

What it cannot tell you

Counts include crashes reported to police and do not measure exposure-adjusted risk. Fatal crashes count events; fatalities count people. Police divisions and station areas are not administrative districts, and overlapping national and city totals must not be added. National figures in later publications can differ from the NTC edition; its historical series is retained without splicing. DCS table 7.4 has conflicting national death figures and is excluded. Only the unmerged 2024 road-user breakdown is included from table 7.6. A dash in the Colombo table retains a nil-or-negligible status rather than an exact zero.
